  • The Streets Of HARLEM (Research Documentary)

The Streets of Harlem...How Black Men in The Streets Adapt to Structural Violence, is a video street ethnography that documents how Harlem-based street identified Black men, across generations, frame notions of resilience in relation to structural inequality. Dr. Yasser Arafat Payne, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware has organized this project with music producer/video director Scott 'Kasper' Gaddy. Johan Galtung (1969) created structural violence theory and he specifically argued that structural systems and institutions through policy and laws, worked to prevent individuals, groups and local communities from “meeting their basic needs”. In other words, according to Galtung (1969), many other scholars and many community l...

Mafia Five Families of New York BBC Documentary 2017 The Five Families are the five major New York City organized crime families of the Italian American Mafia. The term was first used in 1931, when Salvatore Maranzano formally organized the previously warring gangs into what are now known as the Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese crime families, each with demarcated territory, organizationally structured in a now-familiar hierarchy, and having them reporting up to the same overarching governing entity. Initially Maranzano intended each family's boss to report to him as the capo di tutti capi (boss of all bosses), but this led to his assassination and by September the role was replaced by The Commission, which continues to govern American Mafia activities in the United Stat...

Cities - The Real New York 1 of 2 - BBC Travel Documentary, recorded 23.10.2010 This Saturday sees the third episode of BBC World's five-part travel series, The Real... , this time visiting New York. The Real... New York takes a unique look at the Big Apple, taking viewers behind the more familiar scenes of the city to find the hidden highlights that the guide books don't show you. The Real... New York, sponsored by InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, transmits on Saturday 1 December at 1230 GMT, and is repeated on Sunday 2 December at 1030, 1730 and Monday 3 December 0230 GMT. Our guides to New York are three of the city's most famous residents, who give a uniquely personal tour of their home city. The contributors include: ALEK WEK, Supermodel and author Born in southern Sudan, Alek Wek fled the war-ravaged country to become a refugee in London, where she was spotted by a model scout while still in her teens. Alek has combined her successful modelling career with charity work, including work on the U.S. Committee for Refugees and AIDS awareness, and written a book about her life experiences. She has also created her own handbag range - Alek Wek 1933. Alek begins our tour in Brooklyn, close to where she lives. The area boasts an eclectic mix of shops, her favourite being Layla Boutique. Inside the shop Alek rummages through the clothes, scented oils and towels, enjoying the vibrant mix of colours, fragrances and designs. While browsing the clothes rails she even shares with us some fashion tricks of the trade when it comes to mixing and matching clothing. Alek then takes us to visit Brooklyn Bridge Park, as she so often does at the weekend. The bustling park is enjoyed by locals, children at play, photographers and theatrical performers alike, all there to enjoy a little slice of nature in the middle of the urban jungle. We then visit Hue-Man Bookstore in Harlem, a favourite store of Alek's and the location of her first book signing. The store offers a wide variety of literature, as well as a laid back coffee shop, and a parade of interesting customers, many of whom stop Alek to say hello and remark on how inspirational she is to young women. MADHUR JAFFREY, Television chef, actress and author Madhur Jaffrey is a TV presenter, actress and writer, perhaps best know for her Indian and other Asian cookery programmes on BBC Television. Madhur takes us to Chinatown on a tour of her favourite food shops, where she buys the ingredients for use in all of her Asian dishes. She guides us around the array of fresh produce, suggesting recipes as she goes, giving us a glimpse of her famous culinary skills. Then she takes us on an extended tour of the tiny back streets and byways of Chinatown; we are right in the heart of Manhattan, but feeling as if we are in Asia. Madhur then shares with us one of her favourite places to eat in Chinatown, Wanton Garden. The restaurant offers a huge range of delicious noodles and toppings, all presented with authenticity and skill. Madhur orders a take-away lunch for herself and her husband and then jumps in a taxi before it has time to go cold. SPENCER TUNICK, Artist Spencer Tunick is an American installation artist who documents his works using photography and video. He is best known for his installations that feature large numbers of nude people posed in artistic formations, with the largest gathering to date taking place in Mexico City's main square, which featured more than 18,000 people . Spencer first takes us to Printed Matter, a bookshop in Chelsea that he visits when looking for presents for his friends, family and himself. The shop sells limited edition books and artwork, making it a perfect place to find something unique. Spencer then takes us round the corner to The New York Book Art Fair, an annual fair of contemporary art books, catalogues and magazines, and is "a fair unique to New York". As the sun fades over the city that never sleeps, we emerge from the fair and head for one of Spencer's favourite bars, Max Fish, on the Lower East Side. The walls around Max Fish are covered in art, as it is a place where emerging artists can display their work. Wall space is given over to some fantastic graffiti, and the pinball machine, pool table and jukebox all add to the atmosphere. When Spencer first started out as an artist he used to go to Max Fish to hand out prints to people to encourage them to pose for his nude installations. When the call went out to evacuate New York City. In World Trade Center Building 5 workers evacuate up to ground level. Some are injured, limping forward, most are of but clearly in a state of disbelief. Keeping the crown moving police officers usher the evacuees outside and away from the towers. Nearby the firemen plan their approach. having to move across open areas leaving them venerable to debris and people falling from above. As they rush into the towers, workers on the inside are rushing to get out. Moving into the lobby they can see for the first time the destruction just outside when debris is scattered all across the street. Those in the lobby are evacuated through underground tunnels or sky bridges to safety. High above people are still moving down the stairs, some capturing pictures of the scene inside the twin towers. Some looking down at the destruction outside, others capturing the smoke filling the offices and corridors near the impact zone. High above is a New York Police Department helicopter approaches the World Trade Center, surveying the damage and capturing some of the most incredible video of the towers burning I've ever seen. In a heap of smoke fire and rubble Tower 2 collapses at 9:59 AM, sending all those watching the towers into what I think is, fight or flight mode. All around the area New Yorkers run struggling to stay clear of the coming dust cloud. Their shock and horror of the situation in front of them momentarily suspected for a genuine concern for their own safety. Even nearer to the towers, the area has turned into a white ghost land or sirens, and dust and ghostly figures emerging from a distance. Those still inside the still standing North tower now have 29 minutes to escape the same fate. And at 1;28 AM... The second dust cloud hits, turning day into night., The area that was the world trade center, decends into a eerie silence.

In other words, according to Galtung (1969), many other scholars and many community leaders—segments of our society were intentionally sustained in economic poverty for the so-called, “greater good of larger society”. This structural philosophy is still guiding the United States. Structural violence creates and fashions a street identity in low-income Black men, across generations, in Harlem NYC. This film understands structural violence in The Streets of Harlem through the following topics: violence, fatherhood, education, employment, housing, prison re-entry and experiences with police. Additionally, this video street ethnography documents how Black men frame involvement in the streets as a site of resilience in response to egregious experiences with economic poverty. A “street” identity, “street life” or “the streets” is an ideology or way of life centered on personal, social and economic survival. Crime is coping. Ultimately, this project provides a social psychological examination of how street life, as an ideology and set of relations and networks, operates in the lives of low-income Black males as a space within which optimism and struggles for survival are displayed. Filming took place between 2007-2011. Three specific generations of street identified Black men were interviewed: (a) 16-24; (b) 25-44; and (c) 45-above, in the context of individual, dual and group interviews. Those interested in and concerned with understanding more deeply the point of view of street identified Black men should also consider using this film as an instructional tool on how to conduct video-street ethnographies in local communities. We recommend this film be used for undergraduate and graduate courses. Also, the film should be used to generate provocative but informative discussions within local Black communities. And this project can be used by researchers, service providers, non-profit organizations and policy makers to more deeply and critically re-conceptualize notions of resilience and the developing of community-based interventions.

Initially Maranzano intended each family's boss to report to him as the capo di tutti capi (boss of all bosses), but this led to his assassination and by September the role was replaced by The Commission, which continues to govern American Mafia activities in the United States and Canada.

During the Victorian era of the mid-to-late 1800s, New York City was rocked by an epidemic of gang violence. Crime was especially rampant in Manhattan neighborhoods like Five Points, Hell’s Kitchen, the Fourth Ward and the Bowery, where back alleys and tenements became infested with thieves, hustlers and street thugs. These groups trafficked in everything from robbery and prostitution to murder, and their names could strike fear into the hearts of even the most crime-hardened city dwellers. From river pirates to knife-wielding adolescents, get the facts on seven of 19th century New York’s most notorious street gangs. The Forty Thieves One of Gotham’s earliest known criminal outfits, the Forty Thieves operated between the 1820s and 1850s in the Five Points neighborhood of Manhattan. This band of Irish thugs, pickpockets and ne’er-do-wells first came together in a grocery store and dive bar owned by a woman named Rosanna Peers. Under the leadership of Edward Coleman—a notorious rogue who was later hanged for beating his wife to death—what started as a motley group of petty criminals soon blossomed into a feared street gang with its own rules and organizational structure. Members of the Forty Thieves reportedly had quotas that required them to steal a certain amount of goods each day or face expulsion. What’s more, the gang even franchised itself in the form of the “Forty Little Thieves,” a collection of juvenile apprentices who served as pickpockets and lookouts. The Bowery Boys One of the most storied gangs of New York, the Bowery Boys were a band of lower Manhattan toughs who clashed with the Irish Five Points gangs during the 1840s, 50s and 60s. Unlike some of their criminal counterparts, most of the Bowery Boys dressed in elegant clothing and held legitimate employment as printers, mechanics and other apprentice tradesmen. But when they weren’t on the job, these young hoodlums haunted the saloons and back alleys of the Bowery and engaged in bloody turf wars with rival gangs like the Dead Rabbits. The Bowery Boys often acted more as a political club than a mob, and many of their brawls were with supporters of rival politicians. The gang would sometimes even station its members at polling places to intimidate voters into supporting a particular candidate. In return, the gang’s home district would receive money and preferential treatment once the politician was in office. The Dead Rabbits This crew of Irish immigrants was one of the most feared gangs to emerge from Five Points, so named for its location at the intersection of five crooked, narrow, downtown streets. For more than 60 years, Five Points (near modern-day Chinatown) was one of the city’s most notorious—and dangerous–neighborhoods. Throughout the 1850s, the Dead Rabbits excelled at robbery, pick-pocketing and brawling—particularly with their sworn enemies, the Bowery Boys. The group was made up mostly of young men, but it wasn’t unheard of for women to join in on the violence. According to legend, one of the most feared Dead Rabbits was “Hell-Cat Maggie,” a woman who reportedly filed her teeth to points and wore brass fingernails into battle. While the Rabbits mostly dabbled in petty crime, they were also famous for the events of July 4, 1857, when one of their street fights with the Bowery Boys turned into a bloody riot that killed a dozen people. The Dead Rabbits supposedly began as an offshoot of another gang called the Roach Guards, but some historians have suggested the two were actually one and the same. In fact, one popular theory argues that the term “dead rabbit” was simply a pejorative used by the Bowery Boys and the New York press in reference to members of the Roach Guards and other Five Points gangs. The Daybreak Boys New York’s 19th-century gang activity wasn’t limited to the rough and tumble streets of Manhattan—it also extended into the waters of the East River. The Daybreak Boys were one of the most ruthless crews of “river pirates” who preyed on the city’s booming shipping industry during the late 1840s and 1850s. As their name suggests, the Daybreakers— whose leaders went by such colorful monikers as Cow-legged Sam McCarthy and Slobbery Jim —preferred to strike in the hours before dawn. Using small rowboats, these juvenile gangsters would silently row their way alongside anchored shipping vessels. Sneaking aboard, they would steal as much cargo as they could before returning to their dinghies and escaping to a rendezvous point at a gin mill in the Fourth Ward. To prove their mettle, prospective members were reportedly required to have already killed at least once before joining the group, and the Daybreak Boys were supposedly responsible for more than 30 murders— it wasn’t unusual for an unlucky watchman to end up with a slit throat or a fractured skull during one of their robberies. The gang reportedly fell apart in the late 1850s after a police crackdown, but not before they had claimed thousan
